Cedarbrook Ranch started
as a small farm in 1992, in the Ozark foothills of northeast
Arkansas. This region sports a four-season climate, poor
soil, and beautiful scenery. It is also the place where
the flat Mississippi delta region meets the Ozark Mountains.
Besides grass-fed lamb and beef for the meat market, this farm
is about wool and mohair. The sheep and angora goats have
been selected for quality, fine diameter fiber. But
there's more than good animal genes to raising a good fiber
crop. Many management details are important in every
season of the year. Pasture planting, fertilizing,
controlled grazing and mowing head the list. Then there's
one sheep shearing and two goat shearings per year, each of
which is an event that requires coordination, preparation,
execution, and follow up. Hay hauling, predator control,
and fence building and repair are routine tasks.
Veterinary tasks like hoof trimming, parasite control, ear
tagging, and tail docking are chores that every small livestock
farmer pencils into his or her schedule. How diligently
all these management tasks are performed play into how healthy
the animal is during the fiber growing cycle, and many of them
influence whether the fiber stays clean enough to be processed
in a simple mill like ours.
Fine wool from Cedarbrook Ranch forms the basis for our standard
line of yarns and prepared fiber. The pictures below are a
few scenes of the calmer moments on the farm. Let our
products be your little piece of this farm.
