Our tour will follow the
same path that fiber travels through the mill. We will
move through the process in the following order, but feel free
to skip around using the links:
But before we take
you on a tour of the mill itself, take a look at a couple of
shearing pictures. These happen to depict angora goat
shearing. The shearing machine used here is different and
more powerful than the electric clippers used in dog grooming.
The first picture is a kid goat about to get its second haircut.
The second picture is a sheep herd waiting for its spring
appointment with the hairdresser.
The shearing process,
as much as proper care of the animal growing the fiber, can make
or break the quality of the raw fiber. Sorting the fleece
to separate the best fiber from the parts that are inevitably
inferior to some degree is best done and easiest to do at
shearing time.
